2008-05-22 -- How Design Conference 2008, Boston- Awesome!
Wow! I just spent 5 great days in Boston at the How design conference! And a whole lot of time on planes and in airports, but lets not dwell on that part. ;-)
The conference was excellent and Boston was a great place to visit! And here's a stupid decision I made... Before I left I decided that I didn't want to pack the camera with me. It's bulky and I'm going to be in class almost the entire time, right? While that last bit was true, there was still a ton of great stuff to see and do. I SO regretted not bringing my camera!
However, my phone does have a "camera" on it, so I snapped a few pictures with that. (Of course, that only made me wish I'd brought the Canon even more!) Here are a few:
I went for a walk one evening and I thought this was a great shot. Light from the sunset reflected off the clouds and the sky reflected in the building. The fact that my phone yielded a shot this good goes to show how stunning the actual scene was in real life. (Talk about stunning, I think this building is the one that rumor said has dropped sheets of glass when the wind comes up. Eep!)
On Sunday morning I took a trolley around old town Boston. Along the way, I stopped off at the original Cheers for lunch and a beer! The inside of this pub is tiny and not a lot like the Hollywood set, but I heard that somewhere in the city they build another Cheers that actually looks like the set. I didn't check that one out, but I enjoyed the original a lot as it was really quaint. I even wore my conference name badge so that......
This shot is looking out over old town Boston from the third floor of the Hynes Convention Center. Apparently, Boston used to be on an island so some of old town is built on back fill that was brought in by train over the course of 40 years. The ground there was unstable and watery in the past so building on it was tricky. Row housing helped, so there are tons there. And since it was watery, the swampy word "Fen" shows up in names like "Fenway Park."
This is the elppa sign. My gig is entirely Windows driven, but I certainly don't LOVE my computer. Not sure if I would if I had a Mac though, either. Either way, I had to go in and look around. :-) It was neat to see the new Logic Audio and those tiny little laptop computers. They should just have added attachments to the spine of it so you can snap it into your three-ring binder and take it off to class with you. What will they think of next??
This is one of the hallways in the Hynes. The exhibit halls were immense! Each floor was about 3 stories tall. It was wise for How to choose this place, though, because we crowded the place. As it was, we were elbow to elbow between workshops in these hallways, but even with over 4,000 people, we didn't pack the place to the rafters. I dunno if even an NBA convention could with ceilings that high. :-P
OK, more on the conference later, I hope! I think the little one is awake.
